Dr William Okell, a surgeon and apothecary, established Okell’s Brewery in 1850 in Douglas — laying the foundation for what would become one of the Island’s most enduring brands.
In the 1870s he championed the Isle of Man Pure Beer Act, a pioneering brewing law that ensured beer would only be made from water, malt, sugar and hops — long before such purity laws were commonplace elsewhere.
Okell’s success in brewing quality ales quickly led him to acquire local pubs, creating early roots for what is now Okell’s Inns — a network of welcoming venues serving craft beer and great hospitality.

As the popularity of Okell’s beers and inns grew, so did the company’s reach across the Isle of Man and later into the UK.
Over the decades, the brewery adapted to changing technologies and tastes, moving operations to a purpose-built site at Kewaigue outside Douglas in the late 20th century.
Okell’s became part of Heron & Brearley, strengthening its business and hospitality footprint.
Classic ales from the Heritage Collection such as Bitter, IPA, and Manx Pale Ale continue to be celebrated at Okell’s Inns and beyond.

Today, Okell’s Inns stand as vibrant places where friends meet, stories are shared, and the best of Manx hospitality is on display. Each venue reflects a commitment to quality service, great food and drink, and a community-focused spirit that has defined Okell’s for generations.
Whether welcoming visitors from across the world or serving regulars from the Island’s towns and villages, Okell’s Inns continue to carry forward a rich legacy — rooted in heritage but always looking to the future.
We join the journey as a proud partner and we hope to help Okell's continue their hospitality revolution.
